Lagos is steeped in history and culture and the perfect gateway to explore the Algarve region of Portugal. Lagos has some fine examples of both medieval and roman ruins, combined with long sandy beaches that are home to a wide range of holiday villas. Lagos is the perfect gateway to explore the Algarve, with the south-western most point of Europe just a few minutes away in Sagres or the sleepy village of Praia da Luz nearby for those that enjoy the quieter side of the Algarve . Why not check out our villas in Lagos like most of Portugal it benefits from sunshine and warm weather most of the year, with summer temperatures rising into the high 90'sF. number of restaurants, offering a wide variety of menus available in this town.

There are many bars and discos to keep all entertained in the evening and the cultural centre has regular exhibitions, and holds concerts and other events in the auditorium. There is also an open-air auditorium which is wonderful in the summer months for those evenings away from your private holiday villa. Lagos has a cinema showing films with Portuguese subtitles. Folk evenings, Fado singing and Folk Dancing can be found in the larger hotels and restaurants.

There are boat trips, deep-sea fishing trips and tours of the grottoes. Windsurfers can be hired at many of the larger beaches and parasailing is a treat if you like that sort of activity. If you would like to join the local diving teams then please bring with you your certified diving certificate. Essentially now an important tourist town there are still signs of Lagos' ancient past with some of the villas in Lagos still looking very traditional and even a building dating originally back to around 1445 which is recorded as being Europe’s first building used as a slave market. Some of the towns walls still remain after sections were restored.

Attached to the famous 17th Century "gold" church of Santo António. There are many statues to the famous figures of the past that are associated with the history of this town. A sculpture of Dom Sebastião standing in the main square in front of the Town Hall. Also a statue of the Algarve’s only Saint, São Gonçalo de Lagos, who was born in 1360 and died in 1422 in Torres Vedras stands for all to see.

The town’s more modern Marina presents a great image with apartments in Lagos situated around the harbour which is practically the first sight a visitor has of Lagos. Across the river to the east of Lagos is Meia Praia, a very long sandy beach with a gentle slope dotted with beautiful Lagos villas. Praia da Luz, once a fishing village lies to the west and is now devoted to the quieter side of the tourist trade. Home to many residents from the colder northern climates, Lagos is perfect for exploring with a good transport system and easy to drive roads. Another fishing village called Burgau is also to the west of Lagos, this is neighboured by the village of Salema which has Roman ruins proving its past importance.
