Lagos is steeped in history and culture and the perfect
gateway to explore the Algarve region of Portugal. Lagos
has some fine examples of both medieval and roman ruins,
combined with long sandy beaches that are home to a wide

of Europe just a few minutes away in Sagres or the sleepy

There are many bars and discos to keep all entertained
in the evening and the cultural centre has regular exhibitions,
and holds concerts and other events in the auditorium.
There is also an open-air auditorium which is wonderful
in the summer months for those evenings away from your
private holiday villa. Lagos has a cinema showing films
with Portuguese subtitles. Folk evenings, Fado singing
and Folk Dancing can be found in the larger hotels and
restaurants.
There are boat trips, deep-sea fishing trips and tours
of the grottoes. Windsurfers can be hired at many of the
larger beaches and parasailing is a treat if you like
that sort of activity. If you would like to join the local
diving teams then please bring with you your certified
diving certificate. Essentially now an important tourist
town there are still signs of Lagos' ancient past with
some of the villas in Lagos still looking very traditional
and even a building dating originally back to around 1445
which is recorded as being Europe’s first building
used as a slave market. Some of the towns walls still
remain after sections were restored.
Attached to the famous 17th Century "gold"
church of Santo António. There are many statues
to the famous figures of the past that are associated
with the history of this town. A sculpture of Dom Sebastião
standing in the main square in front of the Town Hall.
Also a statue of the Algarve’s only Saint, São
Gonçalo de Lagos, who was born in 1360 and died
in 1422 in Torres Vedras stands for all to see.
The town’s more modern Marina presents a great
image with apartments in Lagos situated around the harbour
which is practically the first sight a visitor has of
Lagos. Across the river to the east of Lagos is Meia Praia,
a very long sandy beach with a gentle slope dotted with
beautiful Lagos villas. Praia da Luz, once a fishing village
lies to the west and is now devoted to the quieter side
of the tourist trade. Home to many residents from the
colder northern climates, Lagos is perfect for exploring
with a good transport system and easy to drive roads.
Another fishing village called Burgau
is also to the west of Lagos, this is neighboured by the
village of Salema which has Roman ruins proving its past
importance.
