Calahonda and Riviera del Sol are favourite destinations for both English and Spanish holiday-makers, as they are both ideally situated right by the sea between Fuengirola and Marbella (both about 15 minutes drive away), and only 30 minutes drive from Malaga Airport. There's an excellent bus service along the coast, with buses running every 25 minutes to lively Fuengirola and exclusive Marbella, stopping off at dozens of beaches, villages, and attractions along the way. If you wish to travel further afield in the Malaga direction, a train will take you along the coast from Fuengirola via such tourist hotspots as Benalmadena and Torremolinos.
Calahonda has a wide variety of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes, including a internet-café, Calahonda has it's own medical centre, sports complexes and tennis club, a picturesque marina at Cabopino, and two golf courses. There are numerous attractions for children along this coast which include water parks at Torremolinos and Fuengirola, Go-Kart tracks, Amusement parks, Sea Life Centre, Zoo in Fuengirola, Mini Golf not to mention the fabulous beaches. Gibraltar and its fascinating history and duty free shopping is only an hours drive and a must do trip is a visit to the top of the Rock via cable car where you can see the famous Rock Apes and fantastic views of Morrocco and the Straits of Gibraltar.
The Sierra Nevada is only about two and a half hours away by car. There is a wide variety of ski-slopes suitable for learners and experts. A full range of equipment and clothing are available for hire, and the prices are very reasonable. The Sierra Nevada is a great place to visit during an out-of-season holiday. Other interesting places to visit include Granada with its magnificent Alhambra Palace, Seville with its famous Giralda tower in the Cathedral, Ronda with its awe-inspiring Puente Nuevo (New Bridge) although it is over 200 years old, the pretty white villages (pueblo blancos) of Mijas, and slightly further afield Frigliana and Competa and the famous Balcon de Europa in Nerja, the Costa del Sol has something for everyone, whether you just enjoy laying around on the beach, play golf or prefer to seek out local history and culture.
