Algarve's capital, Faro, like most other towns, was heavily damaged by an earthquake in 1755. Still, a part of the older town with a medieval wall did survive. The most intriguing buildings to visit include the Se Cathedral, which was rebuilt after the earthquake, as well as the bone chapel at Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church, and the historic Sao Francisco Church. The Roman Milreu ruins are close by, and Faro is also home to a nature reserve, which is a stop-over for many migratory birds. The International Airport has modern facilities, and it is located just west of Faro.
