If you like people and bustling resort towns, then
Benidorm is the place for you. This former fishing village
is now one of the most visited resorts in Europe. You'll
also find plenty of sing-along bars, English pubs and
plates of steak and chips. A favourite haunt for British
families, Benidorm's frenzied nightclub scene is now attracting
a younger crew. The white sand beach is safe and clean.
Alicante, a little further down the coast from Benidorm.
It's an attractive and historic town, with plenty of cafes
and good restaurants. It is also the heart of Costa Blanca's
nightclub scene. Alicante has an imposing 16th-century
fortress. From Alicante there are boat trips to Isla de
Tabarca, a popular snorkeling spot.
For holiday rental accommodation there
is much to choose with holiday
rentals in Denia to the north, villa
in Moraira further down the coast and holiday
villa rentals in Javea which lies east of Denia and
boasts an attractive port and landscape which varies from
rugged cliffs to calm bays and beaches. Closer to Benidorm,
the beach resort of Calpe is popular with families and
its gently-sloping beach, the Playa Levante, has sailing,
sail boarding and waterskiing. About 3km south of Benidorm,
Cala de Finestrat is a small, picturesque town with a
good selection of bars and restaurants, set against a
cove with a background of cliffs. The lovely rural countryside
of the offers villas
in Jalon Valley, 18km inland from Calpe. It's off
the tourist-beaten track, and there are great views over
the valley to the Bernia mountain range. Away from the
fleshpots of Costa Blanca you'll find the surrounding
region is packed with sightseeing alternatives. The city
of Valencia itself is interesting, if not beautiful.
Inland, there are elaborate walled towns, remote monasteries,
mountains, charming spa towns and extensive forests and
gardens, not to mention acres of citrus groves. Worth
visiting is the fairytale town of Morella, one of Spain's
oldest continually inhabited towns. The Els Ports mountain
region, the gothic village of Cati and the palm groves
at Elx should all be included on your itinerary. This
is a year-round destination but most people go for the
sun. Costa Blanca enjoys 11 hours of sun a day in July.
Spring and autumn are also pleasant if you want to avoid
the summer crowds. Temperatures range from 8C in winter
to 32C in summer. Valencia's famous Las Fallas festival
is held between March 12 and 19. Bunol's riotous tomato-throwing
festival (La Tomatina) takes place in August.
