There are well-marked horseback riding routes and hiking trails, that you can use to explore the forests and mountains of Bulgaria. The wildlife in these areas includes rare birds, lynx, bears and other animals that you won't see much of in other places in Europe. You'll enjoy the slower pace of life, which still exists in the rural areas.
As you travel the countryside, you'll find age-old monasteries, housing priests that live as people did in years gone by. Quaint villages dot the landscape, with stone-tiled roofs and the occupants who are still not yet accustomed to so many visitors with many of the villas in Bulgaria are traditional refurbished properties with all the creature comforts of home. There are must-see cities, like Sofia, which is home to museums, alfresco bars and lovely parks. You should also stop in Plovdiv, which has many architectural treasures and the remains of Roman civilizations.
Spend some time at the Rila Monastery, which is among the oldest and most revered in the country. It is well known for the ever-colorful frescoes. Koprivshtitsa is a village that was founded during the National Revival Era, and it is a wonderfully preserved monument dedicated to the nationhood of Bulgaria. If you are into skiing, Bansko is an area you will want to seek out. It's the most busy ski destination in Bulgaria, and is very popular with visitors who want to ski and have relaxing fun in the evenings, as well.
